Ewald Mataré (1887–1965) is one of the most important sculptors of his generation in Germany. At the beginning of the 20th century, he attended the art academy in Berlin with the aim of studying painting. It was not until the early 1920s that he discovered sculpture; his work was characterized by abstract forms and a preference for precious types of wood. In 1932, Mataré was appointed as a sculpture teacher at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf, but the National Socialists soon dismissed him. In the two decades after the Second World War, he became one of the most important German sculptors, also gaining international recognition. Numerous public commissions cemented his fame, such as the bronze portals on the south transept of Cologne Cathedral and the door for the Church of Peace in Hiroshima. The updated catalogue raisonné provides profound insights into the sculptural work of this great Rhenish sculptor. IN DUITS!
