The historical atlas of the Baster, Nama and Griqua states describes the history of the political entities that the descendants of European settlers and the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa established in the 19th century. In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established the Cape Colony which started the advance of European colonialism in Southern Africa. In the subsequent decades and centuries many of the indigenous people were enslaved, expelled or killed.
