Pierre Rosenberg (°1936) se passionne pour l’œuvre de Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) depuis plus de cinquante ans. Il a consacré à l’artiste de nombreux articles et expositions et publie aujourd’hui le Catalogue raisonné de l’œuvre peint, fruit d’un immense travail. Chacune des quelque trois cents notices présente une provenance détaillée de l’œuvre, sa datation, la liste exhaustive de ses dessins préparatoires, de ses copies et propose une analyse stylistique de l’œuvre et de sa place dans l’évolution de la pensée du peintre. Les quatre volumes de l’ouvrage, richement illustrés, ont pour ambition de réunir tout ce que l’on sait aujourd’hui sur l’œuvre de Nicolas Poussin, à ses yeux, le plus grand peintre français.

He has devoted numerous articles and exhibitions to the artist and has now published the Catalogue Raisonné of Poussin’s painted works, the fruit of immense research. Each of the approximately three hundred entries presents a detailed provenance of the work, its dating, a comprehensive list of its preparatory drawings and copies, and offers a stylistic analysis of the work and its place in the evolution of the painter’s thought. The four richly illustrated volumes of this work aim to bring together everything that is currently known about the work of Nicolas Poussin, whom Rosenberg considers the greatest French painter.
