The Cotswolds conjures up images of honey-coloured stone cottages, lush rolling hills, and deeply-cut wooded valleys. The name is apt, originating from a Saxon term meaning ‘wooded hollows amid gentle hills’. The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was designated back in 1966 and is the largest AONB in the country, covering over 780 square miles between Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, straddling six counties: predominantly Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, but also Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Somerset.
